When you are in a car accident or if you have a breakdown, it can be scary. It is something that we don’t expect and sometimes you might have a lot on your mind. You might not remember what to do, or who to call. Your phone might be dead or misplaced in a wreck. You need to know who to call.
You need to have different numbers ready to use. I recommend having the numbers in your phone, but also on a piece of paper in your glove box with your registration. If you are in an accident, the police need to know who to contact. You should keep an in case of an emergency number along with any allergies or medical problems you have. I am allergic to latex, so that is something that emergency workers need to know. If you have seizures or are pregnant, note it on the piece of paper. You can also use a medical app that keeps track of this information. Remember to include family members too. I think both is best, just in case.
You will also need to have your insurance company’s number so you can alert them of the accident. The sooner, the better. Dealing with insurance companies can be frustrating, but helpful. You want to let them know right away so you can get back on the road as soon as possible.
Have local and state police numbers in your phone too. You might get in a little accident, but you still need to call the police to file a report. Don’t rely on the other driver’s word that they will take care of it. If they ask you not to call the police, that should be a huge red flag. If it’s a small accident and no one is hurt you don’t need to call 9-1-1, the non-emergency number is just fine.
If you have roadside assistance, don’t forget to keep their number in your phone too. You can even put your account number from your roadside assistance in the contact. If your purse is like mine, you don’t want to dig through a bunch of stuff to find the card. Even if you don’t have roadside assistance, have a number for a tow truck. Trying to search the internet for a tow truck number can be annoying, be prepared.
You should also have a disposable camera in your glove box, to take photos. I know that is a weird thing these days but it might help you a lot. Phones break and malfunction, and you only have a short time to take photos.
